Summer plans

I'm looking for advice, friends.

I realize I may be a little late in planning this (in terms of application deadlines), but I'm trying to figure out what to do with myself next summer. Any suggestions of programs, job opportunities, workshops, seminars, or awesome travel options? The world is my oyster, as it were....

Travel, definitely. St. Augustine said, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page."

As teachers, we have something few people have: paid time off. Our summer break is as much a part of our salary as our paychecks. We should spend that time wisely, living our lives instead of enduring them.

Pack a bag, buy a plane ticket, and see something completely different than your home city. You'll never regreat it.

OH, trust me, I need no incentive to travel. I try to get out of state at least every two months. The question is, where?

A good question. Are you looking for something active, like hiking or biking? Are you looking for culture, like theatre and art? Hotels, hostels, or camping? The world is your oyster.

Whether you travel or stay at home, always remember that it's not the postcard-esque settings we tell stories about, it's the human connections. Our summer in Northampton helped me realize what a precious commodity interpersonal communication is, and that we should never resist it. Whatever you do, talk to people. Let them tell stories about you to their friends.

Have you looked at the NEH seminars? They're week long versions of institutes and there's all kinds of topics. I had a great time in at one in Birmingham in 05. You can do them year after year.

It's worth checking out...
