Suggestions?

Help me, fellow directors!
We're setting "Much Ado" in Shakespeare's time, which makes for tricky costumes for my students. I'd rather not have them made, so I'm looking for suggestions. Any companies you know that are good for rental? What do you all do for costumes?

Thanks in advance!
Amanda

I have no idea what your budget is like, but ours is pretty much nonexistent. So, we cheat a lot with our costumes.

One thing that works, if you want something pants-like, is actually sweatpants, the kind with elastic at the ankle. If you get them in dark colors, and push them to the knee, they "pouf" out. On stage they look ok for the lower class characters.

We've also "made" a lot of vests and surcoats from felt (fabric tape is key!). It's a very sturdy material, and it doesn't fray.

I don't know if this helped or not, but there you go. -mel

Since we have no storage space to save anything we make or buy, we rent. We use Norcostco (Northern Costume Company). I know they have locations all over the country and they'll ship to you. But it's not cheap.
