News You Can Use--Unless You're A Girl

Don't get me wrong, I am female and therefore really won't care (really, I am listening to very sensitive and girly music right now), but when I heard that Rush has a new album coming soon. I've been laughing all night trying to remember the haiku from the guy at the record store in Northampton.

Anyone?? Haiku on chicks not liking Rush??

If you have boobies,
Tom Sawyer is just a book,
not a lame ass song.

Personally, I think the imagery of "love and life being as deep as skies are wide" (found in Tom Sawyer) is very close to the image of the "boundless sea."

Peart's not Shakespeare, nor is he Missouri's dear Sam Clemens, but he does understand imagery.

Here's an example from
Red Barchetta:

"Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air;
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware"

In these few words (especially when infused with the verve of Rush's instrumental work) we feel the thrill of a high speed drive through a tranquil landscape. I will admit that the automobile-based thrills of leather, oil, hot metal, and chrome are almost exclusively male... but that doesn't, in my mind, invalidate those images.

I could go on, but you're waiting for a Haiku. Here are a couple of them.

Great female distain
For rough, hard-edged rock poets
Is not a surprise.

Ugly Geddy Lee
Screeches at the microphone
Hoping girls listen.

Emily --

Yet another reason why I love you. When I read your haiku, I thought you just really, really hated Rush lyrics... hated them so much you didn't want them played on radio!

Maybe, it's the automotive images with the leather and the country air (I loves me my Mini Cooper, but most likely it was the Moving Pictures Tour in 1981 with my drummer boyfriend:

Once again I am
The odd girl out at Smith;
I've always loved Rush.

...and along these line...

Whoo!! A call from Kim!!!
Her sweet voice implores of me,
"Who the hell is Rush?"

This really happened, but with more syllables.

"Tom Sawyer" was featured as a song on the radio in the latest episode of "The Sopranos."

So... here's a haiku in honor of that peculiar situation:

Tony's feeling good
Riding in his S-U-V,
Rush tunes in his head.
